Plenty of people believe the Eagles will make big move with A.J. Brown since the NFL is ready to pounce
The Eagles may decide to make a bold move with A.J. Brown this offseason.
The Philadelphia Eagles have some good vibes around them as they enter Week 16 against the Washington Commanders. They just dominated the Las Vegas Raiders on both sides of the football, and there were some joyful moments for multiple offensive skill pieces who have shown frustration at times this season.
That being said, the future of top wide receiver A.J. Brown is always worth monitoring. Rumors will stir as the year unwinds, and reports of Philly’s plans with him will start to surface over the next couple of months.
Eagles may be tempted to trade A.J. Brown during offseason
According to ESPN’s weekly “buzz” article, Brown’s future in Philadelphia is a situation to monitor once the season wraps up. Teams will be interested in trading for the veteran playmaker, and unrest from Brown could push the Eagles’ front office to move on if offered the correct deal.
“I have several candidates, but let’s start with A.J. Brown. The weekly concerns about Brown’s messaging — from sonnets to soundbites — must be taxing on Philadelphia’s locker room, even if players understand the receiver’s frustration due to the limitations of the Eagles’ passing attack. Several executives I spoke to believe the Eagles could look to move Brown, who’s 28 and still has prime years left.
“He would undoubtedly have a market. He’s due $50 million in cash over the next two years, which is manageable for a WR1. The Eagles would absorb a $20 million cap hit if he’s traded before June 1, or they could save $7 million on the cap by waiting until after June 1 to deal him. Either way, the Eagles have shown cap challenges won’t deter them (see: the Carson Wentz trade). And it seems that Brown would welcome a new passing game at this point.” — Jeremy Fowler, ESPN
Moving on from Brown would be a bold move. That would leave DeVonta Smith as the top WR on the depth chart and place a lot of pressure on the organization to add another key pass catcher. They have struggled to find a clear WR3 option for some time, so this sort of decision would only take that to the next level.
Also, keep in mind that Dallas Goedert is not under contract past this season. If Philly traded away Brown and allowed Goedert to walk in free agency, it would be forced to try to replace arguably its top two pass catchers.
As of now, this situation can be put on hold. The Eagles are trying to win back-to-back NFC East titles and prove that they are a Super Bowl contender once again as the regular season winds down. We’ll see if Brown is donning green next season in Philadelphia or not soon enough.
