Eagles change the league: NFL players liberated to wear No. 0
The NFL continues to shed tradition, finally allowing players to wear No. 0, following approval of the Eagles’ rule proposal.
After discarding tradition in 2021, the Philadelphia Eagles proposed to take it one step further — allowing players to wear No. 0.
On Tuesday, the NFL owners approved the Eagles' proposal, finally ushering professional football into the modern era.
Much like the 2021 change, the NFL is following in the footsteps of college football, where players have been allowed to wear No. 0 since the 2020 season.
Adding zero to the number mix allows players to choose that digit, and would mark the first time an NFL player wore No. 0 or 00 as a jersey number since 1981.
The amended rule allows quarterbacks to choose from numbers 0-19; defensive backs 0-49; fullbacks, tight ends, and halfbacks and wide receivers 0-49 and 80-89; linebackers 0-59 and 90-99. Offensive linemen remain relegated to 50-79, while defensive linemen can wear 50-79 and 90-99.
Also, the amended rule also expands the numbers punters and placekickers can wear to 0-49 and 90-99, where they were previously allowed to wear 1-19.
Only time will tell in regard to who the first Philadelphia Eagles player to wear 0 will be.
