The Philadelphia Eagles continue to build out their 2026 coaching staff under head coach Nick Sirianni. In the NFL, that can be an evergreen task this time of year as assistants get plucked away, fired, or choose to move on themselves.

The defensive staff for the Eagles has seen less transition than the offensive group after defensive coordinator Vic Fangio chose to stay with the Eagles and not retire. That being said, one key assistant position remained vacant until Friday, according to the latest report.

Eagles hire new defensive backs coach after Christian Parker left for Cowboys

According to Matt Zenitz, the Eagles are set to hire Buffalo Bills nickel backs coach Mike Pellegrino as their new defensive backs coach. Philly’s previous DBs coach, Christian Parker, took the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator job earlier in the offseason.

Mike Pellegrino’s NFL coaching history

Pellegrino started his NFL coaching career in 2015 as a Patriots coaching assistant. He was promoted to cornerbacks coach for the Patriots in 2019. He is a two-time Super Bowl champion as an assistant.

During his time in New England, the young coach worked with cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez, J.C. Jackson, and Stephon Gilmore. All three have a strong pedigree, and he played a role in their development. Pellegrino spent just one season with Buffalo, the 2025 campaign.

  • 2019-2024: New England Patriots CBs coach
  • 2025: Buffalo Bills nickelbacks coach

Development for the cornerback room will be a key piece to Pellegrino’s role in Philadelphia. Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean were both Pro Bowl talents in 2025, but the Eagles need more consistency from the other CB spot.

Philly could choose to add talent in the secondary during the 2026 NFL Draft, but keep an eye out for them during free agency as well. GM Howie Roseman may go back to the well when it comes to adding a veteran player to the CB depth chart for 2026.
