The Philadelphia Eagles defense has ascended into one of the league's best on paper after a recent move.
The Eagles have almost always had a good defense. Well, this has the potential to be one of their best. The defense will be the identity of their team, as they will display a nitty gritty, nasty, mean defense throughout the season. We should get a sneak peek of that against the Detroit Lions in Week 1.
With the new additions of Haason Reddick and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, the Eagles will be able to do anything on that side of the ball.
As for how the new additions look so far, well defensive coordinator Johnathan Gannon had positive words about Gardner-Johnson, and what he can bring to the team.
"It was good to add him to the unit and to that entire room," Gannon told reporters on Tuesday when asked about what he likes in Gardner-Johnson. "Really like his skill set and the player that he is and I'm looking forward to seeing him mesh with our defense and hopefully make some plays for us."
Gannon was then asked how to acclimate him to the defense and make sure he is ready for Week 1 against Detroit.
"Good question, you know, like we talked about, everybody is a little bit different with that. D.K. [D.K. McDonald, defensive backs coach] and D Will [Dennard Wilson, defensive passing game coordinator] are obviously spending a little more time with him to try and get him caught up. He's very smart, he's intelligent, his skill set fits to what we want to do, and when he's ready to play, he will play."
It sounds like the Eagles could be without their new defensive back in Gardner-Johnson for Week 1. If they are, I wouldn't be worried about it, as the Lions won't be much of a threat anyways.
If he is playing on Sunday, we will get to see a guy who is made for Philly football. He has the skills, which is always important, but he also, as the kids would say, has that dawg in him.
Gardner-Johnson will fit in perfectly with the team, and I think the coaches know that as well. He could be the very reason the Eagles have one of the best, if not the best, defensive back units in the league.
Just imagine Darius Slay, James Bradberry, Avonte Maddox, Marcus Epps, and now Gardner-Johnson all in the secondary. We are sure to see some defensive masterpieces on Sunday and throughout the season.
