Eagles confirm suspicion surrounding coaching staff after latest move
The Philadelphia Eagles have finally made a move that’s been expected for a couple of weeks.
Once the Philadelphia Eagles lost former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to the Indianapolis Colts, the vast majority of eyes and talking points turned toward quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson.
Most suspected he would become the Eagles' next OC due to his exceptional work with Pro Bowl quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Sure enough, that happened Tuesday after the Eagles promoted Johnson to offensive coordinator.
ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news.
According to Schefter, Johnson had other offensive coordinator opportunities but he chose to remain in Philadelphia instead of pursuing those other opportunities.
This was always the best-case scenario for the Eagles.
Johnson doesn't have any previous NFL offensive coordinator experience, but he has some experience at the collegiate level. The Texas native has served as the offensive coordinator at Utah (2012-13), Houston (2017), and Florida (2020). That playcalling experience should help him in his new role with the Eagles.
The most important part of this move, though, is that it gives Hurts some important continuity. Johnson has been his quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons so it should be a seamless transition for the playcaller/quarterback duo in 2023.
Assistant quarterbacks coach/offensive assistant Alex Tanney could be a candidate to replace Johnson as the Eagles' quarterbacks coach.
