The Philadelphia Eagles' decision to hire Scot Loeffler as their new quarterbacks coach initially seemed odd on the outside looking in.

However, head coach Nick Sirianni dove into the reason exactly why Loeffler was their guy, and it came down to the simple fact that he is football-obsessed.

“You do a lot of work. You interview a lot of different guys. You cast a wide net in the attempt to find the right person,” Sirianni said at the NFL league meetings. “And there was a lot of good candidates that we interviewed. Scot stood out. Probably called a ton of guys to not only the interview process but the vetting process at the end. Called the guys to see what he’s like. It just kept coming back that Scot is obsessed with football, loves football. Is just a grinder and just very knowledgeable on quarterback play."

Loeffler, 50, makes the move back to the NFL after going 27-41 in six seasons at Bowling Green.

His background in coaching mostly stems from the college level, although he does have one NFL season on his resume. Loeffler worked with quarterbacks at the Detroit Lions in 2008 before going back to college and joining Urban Meyer at Florida in 2009.

While Loeffler, a former Michigan quarterback himself, lacks NFL coaching experience, he has worked with plenty of notable quarterbacks throughout the years, including Tim Tebow, Tom Brady, Brian Griese, Logan Thomas, Anthony Brown, Chad Henne, Drew Henson, and John Navarre.

Loeffler will coach under Eagles' new offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo, who was an internal hire. The hope is that not much will change for Hurts, who has now worked with five different offensive coordinators and four different quarterback coaches in six seasons.

“We’re able to get some new, fresh ideas from him on things that he’s done as the head coach at Bowling Green and prior time before that," Sirianni said. "Really excited about the addition of Scot. You’ll see.

"Not going to get specific into that. Fresh ideas. Obviously, we hired him to be the quarterbacks coach and to continue to develop, help Jalen Hurts continue to rise. And he’s an expert at quarterback play. He’s just obsessed with football. But the new ideas, what I was speaking about with new ideas are some of the things that they ran offensively that just give us fresh thoughts into our offense."
