Another key contributor to the Philadelphia Eagles' 2022 season is moving on.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions signed defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to a one-year deal worth up to $8 million on Sunday night. CGJ joins the likes of Javon Hargrave, Issac Seumalo, and T.J. Edwards as Eagles free agency departures, so far.
It's a big blow for the Eagles. For starters, Gardner-Johnson led the Eagles with six interceptions, which was also good for a share of the league lead. His versatility/ability to play both safety and nickel positions, his abilities in run defense, and the dog mentality he brought to the huddle are traits that will be very hard to replace.
The Eagles retained their two starting corners in James Bradberry and Darius Slay, but the safety room has taken a hit this offseason, as the defense also lost starter Marcus Epps to the Las Vegas Raiders last week. Right now, the Eagles have a little over $1.8 million in cap room, so it looks like they'll address the position through the draft instead of remaining free agency. Unless the team makes a big move to clear cap space, of course.
Losing Gardner-Johnson won't be an easy task to overcome, but if there is any front office that is smart enough and savvy enough to pull it off – the Eagles FO is certainly right there at the top of the list.
