The Philadelphia Eagles' new free agency signing Josh Uche has not seen double-digit sacks since 2022, however, he is extremely confident that the move from Kansas City to Philly is going to be the right one.
"The stars aligned, and I feel like this is where God called me to be," Uche said while speaking to the Eagles media for the first time this week.
Uche, 26, was originally a second-round pick out of Michigan by the New England Patriots in the 2020 NFL draft (60th overall).
His breakout year with the Pats came two years later when he racked up 11.5 sacks through 15 regular-season games.
Uche failed to reach that kind of production again and was ultimately traded to the Chiefs in October of 2024. He played a total of just 37 defensive snaps in five games with KC last fall, finishing the year with two sacks to his name, which both came from the start of the year in New England.
Through 64 career games in five seasons, Uche has racked up 20.5 sacks and 34 quarterback hits.
While those numbers are nothing to write home about, Eagles' defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is known for resurrecting player's career just like he did with Zack Baun and several other Eagles defenders, last season en route to a Super Bowl championship. That said, Uche is in excellent hands coming to Philly.
"To play for a coach like (Head Coach Nick) Sirianni and coach (Defensive Coordinator Vic) Fangio is an honor," Uche said. "Two great coaches in their own respects. Just getting an opportunity to continue playing this game and fulfil my potential."
Uche is also well aware that his age plays a role in the kind of success that is still waiting for him.
"Being 26 years old, I've got a lot left in the tank," Uche said. "It just comes down to opportunity and getting on the field doing my job. Whenever I'm on the field I've been effective, I've been efficient, so it's just all about getting on the field and doing my job."
The Eagles lost star edge rusher Josh Sweat to free agency last week, so Uche joining the team with a hungry mindset and readiness to compete is exactly what the doctor ordered as the Birds look to remain Super Bowl contenders in 2025.
