Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Haason Reddick is having surgery ahead of the 2023 NFL regular season, reported NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Reddick suffered a thumb injury during Monday's practice and is expected to return in time for Week 1 against the New England Patriots on Sunday, September, 10th.

As minor as the injury might be, it's clear the timetable is relatively tight considering surgery is involved and the season's kickoff is less than a month away.

The good news is the Eagles have a very deep group of defensive linemen, even if Reddick is the top-edge rusher on the team. Considering their Super Bowl aspirations in 2023, it'd be smart to play the long game and remain as patient as possible when it comes to his return to the field.

Reddick aims to build on a career-best season where he accumulated 16 sacks and led the entire league with five forced fumbles. He also had 11 tackles for loss and 26 QB hits.

Such numbers led to him receiving a Second-Team All-Pro honors and a fourth-place finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting. It was also his first Pro Bowl year.

Under contract through 2024, Reddick is also seeking consecutive strong seasons to draw the Eagles to the negotiating table. He's set to make $16.5 million in 2023, well under market value for a top player like himself.
