Eagles Hall of Famer doesn't hold back on former defensive coordinator

It is safe to say, Brian Dawkins, the former Philadelphia Eagles safety, isn't a fan of Jonathan Gannon, the former Eagles defensive coordinator.
Dawkins shared his opinions on Gannon, the now head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, on the 94WIP Midday show. And what he had to say about the Eagles' former defensive coordinator wasn't exactly glowing.
“As for me, playing under this defensive coordinator—me personally? I would’ve hated it,” Dawkins said, per 94WIP. “Because none of the things that I was blessed to do blitzing would have been added to this defense under Gannon … He took advantage of the personnel that the front office gave him. Got a lot of dudes that can win one on one battles and so he put those guys in a position to have that success through the year. The only thing that I kept saying all year is that when your fastball is not working, you have to have a changeup and you have to be used to throwing that change.”
Who Brian Dawkins would want as a defensive coordinator
Dawkins, though it isn't what many want to hear, is right. When Gannon's defensive plan wasn't working in the Super Bowl, he had nothing else to utilize. His high-risk, high-reward scheme was picked apart by an elite quarterback. And there is no reason to believe the same thing won't happen in Arizona.
Either way, the Eagles parting with Gannon may actually help the defense. Philadelphia now has a chance to bring in a coordinator that will offer more than one look to offenses. The organization can bring in a guy that can make defensive adjustments when a scheme isn't working. And that was something that Gannon simply couldn't do.
Maybe the Eagles offering Gannon a deal he could refuse was actually a blessing in disguise. If you ask Dawkins, it probably was.
So who does Dawkins think the Eagles should bring in to command the defense? Vance Joseph. He likes that he mixes schemes and makes adjustments on the fly.
“Me personally? I would love it to be Vance because I know that he’s aggressive, I know that he’s elaborate, I know he blitzes, I know he mixes things up in different situations,” Dawkins said, per 94WIP. “So I would love that hire.”
The Eagles have a call with Joseph on Wednesday.
