Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni cleared the air on a dicey situation that cost his team the lead early on in Sunday night’s win over the Green Bay Packers.
Sirianni addressed the decision to not challenge a Jalen Hurts run up the middle on 3rd & 1 with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter. Though it looked like Hurts had enough for the first down, he was ruled short, which set up for a 4th & 1.
The Eagles were stopped on fourth down, giving Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense the football at Philadelphia’s 37-yard line.
“We have to feel really confident that we’ll win that if we challenge it. We just didn’t in that particular case. There are things, like obviously I’m not seeing that and I’m trusting my eyes upstairs. They’ve been great all year and so I trust what they say. I think I’m getting good information from them,” Sirianni said.
He continued saying, “Of course, sometimes, we don’t know exactly where the knee was and maybe it looks like we got it but can you tell with wjere he’s down and everything like that. I love the guys upstairs. They’re giving me great information, and then I went for it the next play with a very similar play and it didn’t work, and we put the defense in a tough spot because of my decision.”
Green Bay capitalized on the Eagles’ miscue, taking a 14-13 lead on the subsequent drive. Philadelphia had lost all momentum after going up 13-0 just over five minutes into the game.
Sirianni has made multiple decisions that have left Eagles fans scratching their heads over the last few weeks. In order for Philadelphia to make deep run in the postseason, Sirianni and his staff must be sharper in these critical situations.
