Eagles GM Howie Roseman avoids salary cap disaster by bringing Super Bowl champion back for another season
An offensive playmaker is back for the Birds.
Howie Roseman continues to decipher how he can improve the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2026 season. His latest move is not an addition, necessarily, but it caused a collective sigh of relief from Eagles fandom.
Tight end Dallas Goedert will be wearing green once again next season.
Dallas Goedert returns to the Eagles on one-year deal
According to reports, the Eagles have checked off a huge task off their offseason to-do list. They’re re-signing tight end Dallas Goedert to a one-year deal worth $7 million. Tight end had become a position if concern if Goedert wasn’t retained.
Now, the Birds won’t have to worry about that and can focus on adding depth talent at TE during the 2026 NFL Draft. Remember that they also re-signed backup TE Grant Calcaterra as well last week.
Goedert’s A to Z Top-100 NFL Free Agents Ranking: #38
“Many may not have realized it, but Dallas Goedert had one of his best years in 2025. His 591 yards don’t stand out, but he set a new career-high with 60 receptions and doubled his previous career high in touchdowns with 11. At 31 years old, it’s fair to assume this could be his final chance to land a significant contract and that he will likely cash in.” – Destin Adams
Salary cap problem escaped by the Eagles
With the agreement from Philly and the tight end, the Eagles avoid a dead cap hit of more than $20 million. That is a huge chunk of change when you consider that Philadelphia still has to sign a rookie class and make more impactful moves during the latter stages of free agency to sure up the depth of the roster.
The dead cap hit would have become a reality for the Eagles when Goedert’s contract expired this Monday. That was actually set to occur earlier in the offseason, but the two sides pushed that void date back multiple times.
Accordingly, Goedert never truly hit the open market.
It will be exciting to see how productive Goedert can be in a scheme like Sean Mannion’s. The new Eagles OC worked hand in hand with Matt LeFleur in Green Bay over the past couple of years and watched the ascension of Packers TE Tucker Kraft.
We could see some similar usage and upside from Goedert this season, following his 2025 campaign where many people thought he was them most consistent pass catcher in the Eagles offense. With more creativity set to hit the passing game for the Birds, let’s see how he and others can produce with Jalen Hurts at quarterback.
