The Philadelphia Eagles are undefeated after five weeks of football and rank relatively high in almost every single category, except for red zone offense.
Last season the Eagles ranked third in red zone scoring and now the team sits at 27th with a 42 percent red zone touchdown success rate.
Over the last 12 trips to the red zone, the Eagles have scored only four touchdowns.
It doesn't make sense considering the Eagles have all of the pieces that they need for red zone success from their quarterback Jalen Hurts and endless receiving options to their run game and solid offensive line.
When addressed about the red zone woes, Eagles' first-year offensive coordinator Brian Johnson couldn't pinpoint "one thing" that's keeping them from performing better in those critical moments, but said it all starts with coaching.
"Particularly," he said, "there hasn't been one thing that's prevented us from scoring the touchdowns that we need to score down there, which we all know we're capable of doing.
"For us, it's really just a balance act of 'A', we've got to do a great job of putting a plan together and putting those guys in a position to make plays. Secondly, we've got to do a great job of executing and then we have to be great at our operating, whether that's in and out, making the proper checks, putting those guys in position to be successful down there."
As for quarterback Jalen Hurts, he believes the new offense will come together with time.
“I think we’re still growing and we’re still building as a team and honestly feel that every other team in the NFL right now is doing the same thing,” Hurts said following Sunday's win. “We just want to continue the steady climb of being eager every day to get better and being intentional with our time at the building and on the field and pulling the most out of ourselves.”
Other than looking like a hot mess in the red zone, the Eagles offense is doing just fine, with Hurts coming off back-to-back 300-yard outings.
He'll look to lead to Eagles to their sixth straight win when they take on the New York Jets for their Week 6 matchup.
