Eagles get the rug pulled out from underneath them in bidding war for Jaelan Phillips during NFL free agency
Philly just suffered a tough offseason loss.
The Philadelphia Eagles just took a punch to the gut to begin the two day negotiating window for NFL free agency. One of their most prized free agents most likely won’t be returning to the team.
Panthers agree to terms with pass rusher Jaelan Phillips
According to reports, the Panthers have agreed to a deal with former Eagles EDGE rusher Jaelan Phillips on a 4-year, $120 million deal. That is $30M per season in AAV. Massive contract if it becomes official on Wednesday for Carolina.
Eagles tried to bring back Phillips but fall short
Jordan Schultz confirmed the recent reports that the Eagles wanted to bring Phillips back. Ultimately, the price just got too high for their liking, even after sending the Miami Dolphins a third-round pick last year in exchange for a partial season from Phillips.
“Philly made a huge push to get Jaelan Phillips back, but the #Panthers came in at a whopping $30M per year.” — Schultz via Twitter/X
The Eagles allowed 23.1 points per game prior to the Phillips trade last season, and fans began to worry. Then, following the deal, Philadelphia was the league’s No. 1 scoring defense from Week 10 through the regular season finish, allowing just 15.6 points per game in that span.
Now, pass rusher emerges as one of the biggest needs on the roster for Philadelphia. Bringing back Phillips would have sured up that spot along the defense, but now, the depth is certainly lacking. Phillips was arguably Philly’s top pass rushing defender off the edge once joining the team in 2025.
