The Philadelphia Eagles are taking their sweet time writing up a new deal for wide receiver DeVonta Smith, but it's expected to happen at some point this offseason.
ESPN's Tim McManus shared an update on where the Eagles and Smith currently stand.
"The Eagles are making efforts behind the scenes to get something done with 25-year-old Smith," McManus writes. "Contract talks are ongoing, sources familiar with negotiations said, and there's general optimism that a deal will materialize in the near future."
McManus notes that he doesn't know exactly when Brown's contract extension will get done but believes it will happen sooner, rather than later.
"Philadelphia has a well-established history of signing foundational players as early as possible, in part because they know the price tag will only go up," he writes. "With a number of top-end receivers eligible for new deals, including Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase, there's likely extra incentive to get something done with Smith before the market resets."
The Eagles have until May 2 to pick up Smith's fifth-year option which will pay him a fully guaranteed $15.59 million in 2025, though he's worth more than that.
McManus Projects Smith Signs a $25 Million Per Season Deal or More
While McManus doesn't see Smith getting a $30 million annual salary, he won't be surprised if Smith lands an extension that pays him $25 million or more annually.
That looks high for a No. 2 wide receiver but McManus believes that paying Smith that much would benefit the Eagles down the road.
"Smith has proven to be a high-end, durable player over his three years in Philly — he's missed just one game despite concerns coming out of college about his slim build — and looks to be emerging as a team leader," McManus writes. "If those trends continue, his new deal could look like a bargain before long."
Since being drafted 10th overall by Philadelphia in 2020, Smith has reeled in 240 catches for 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns in seasons with the Birds.
