When the Philadelphia Eagles released their first unofficial depth chart for Week 1, they hadn't fully listed some of their starters on defense, including the other safety spot alongside Reed Blankenship.
But Eagles' head coach Nick Sirianni is in no hurry to do so.
"There’s no need to yet,” Sirianni when asked about naming a starting safety on Tuesday.
The options next to Blankenship are Sydney Brown, Terrell Edmunds, and Justin Evans.
Brown had an impressive preseason, but considering he is a rookie and already slotted behind Blanekship as a second-team safety, the job will come down to Edmunds or Evans.
The Eagles brought in Edmunds during free agency this offseason, signing him to a one-year deal after he had spent the last five seasons in Pittsburgh. The former first-round pick of the Steelers in 2018 has started 75 of the 79 games he has played in so far. That speaks for itself.
As for Evans, he also joined the Eagles in free agency. His career has been riddled with injuries since the beginning, but he is now healthy and looked promising through training camp and the preseason.
Last season with the New Orleans Saints, Evans played in 15 games and logged 29 total tackles and two passes defended. That's in comparison to the 70 tackles, two sacks, and five passes defended that Edmunds had through 15 games with Pittsburgh last year.
On paper, Edmunds is the obvious answer here. But we'll see who Sirianni decides to go with against the New England Patriots come Sunday by 3 p.m. ET.
