I don't think anyone could have projected that Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni would be on the hot seat when the Birds were 10-1.
But here we are, questioning Sirianni's future with the team following a historic late-season collapse and we may get an answer as early as today.
According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Sirianni is scheduled to meet with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman on Wednesday.
McLane pointed out that even if Sirianni stays with the team, "significant changes" will be made to the offensive and defensive coaching staff.
He also adds that whatever is going on between Sirianni and quarterback Jalen Hurts, who didn't deny ESPN's Tim McManus' report that said he was unhappy with the offense, could factor into the Eagles' final decision.
Additionally, McLane uses former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson as an example.
"Lurie went into his exit interview with former Eagles HC Doug Pederson after the 2020 season expecting to keep him," writes McLane. "But he wasn’t satisfied with Pederson’s coordinator candidates, there was an impasse and Lurie fired him."
Pederson led the Eagles for five seasons, compiling a record of 42-37-1, which featured a 2017 Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots. He was fired from the Eagles in January of 2021. Pederson's departure from the Birds had a lot to do with Carson Wentz's regression at quarterback and the fact that the Eagles finished 4-11-1 and last in the NFC East during his final season in Philly.
In three seasons with the Eagles, Sirianni has compiled a 34-17 record with three consecutive post-seasons (2-3) and a Super Bowl appearance, which resulted in a 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
That doesn't look like a bad coaching stint on paper, but the disastrous end to this season shows otherwise.
And if we learned anything in the last week from looking around the league, it's that "nobody is safe," just as Lane Johnson said following the Eagles' 32-9 blowout loss to Tampa.
