Eagles HC Nick Sirianni pours freezing cold water on decision that may completely change the future of Philadelphia’s offense
The Eagles are not making a key change along their coaching staff.
The Philadelphia Eagles do not have one difficult decision on their radar, according to head coach Nick Sirianni. After a laughable second half performance from their offense in the second half of the Week 12 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, one notable change isn’t happening. Fans may not like to hear about it, either.
Nick Sirianni doesn’t plan on making offensive play-calling change
Nick Sirianni said on Monday that he hasn’t contemplated taking play-calling away from Kevin Patullo as of yet. It’s a move that fans have asked for over the course of the last month, but the Eagles head coach is sticking with the guy he trusts most at the helm of the unit.
“I thought Kevin did a good job of calling it [the offense].” — Nick Sirianni after Week 12 loss to Cowboys
After starting out incredibly strong in the first half that saw a resurgence from A.J. Brown, the Eagles offense backed itself into a corner against the Cowboys in the second half. They played not to lose – rather than to win the rivalry game. That is inexcusable.
Some of the motion that Philly used early on went away, and the running game was mostly bottled up due to a lack of creativity. In the passing game, there didn’t seem to be any trust in Jalen Hurts as many of the designs pushed the QB to throw the ball at or behind the line of scrimmage. With lackluster blocking at times, those plays were blown up and handed Dallas momentum.
On Philly’s final eight possessions of the game against Dallas, they did not score a point. Those drives included five punts, a missed field goal, a fumble, and the end of the first half. That doesn’t include the fumbled punt return, either. They bogged down aggressively, and Patullo owns some fault in that.
This lack of a bold move by Sirianni to alter play-calling does raise a red flag for the future. It seems clear to everyone else, including some players, that there is some sort of flaw in the consistency when it comes to the calls by the current OC. He isn’t finding nearly the same success that Kellen Moore did last season, and Jalen Hurts looks more limited than fans hoped for entering the season.
The biggest concern may be with the running game for the Eagles, too. Saquon Barkley never got anything going against the Cowboys, and the Eagles were not prepared for five-man fronts that Dallas has been deploying a ton of in recent weeks.
Fans will have to wait for changes (if they ever do come) when it comes to offensive play-calling. Sirianni has doubled down in his belief in Patullo and the team’s talent on that side of the football.
