Eagles make head-scratching decision on coaching staff
The Philadelphia Eagles announced an intriguing decision that could leave fans scratching their heads.
The 2023 offseason has been a bit of a circus for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Head coach Nick Sirianni is already tasked with replacing his offensive and defensive coordinators. While those searches are still ongoing, the Eagles made a decision that is leaving many in the fanbase scratching their heads.
On Monday, the team announced that it had extended special teams coordinator Michael Clay. Philadelphia is adding an extra year, along with a pay raise, to Clay’s contract, which will now run through the 2024 season, per Aaron Wilson.
Clay came under fire late in the season, and especially in the Super Bowl for costly mistakes in high leverage situations. Perhaps the biggest special teams blunder came in Super Bowl LVII when Chiefs return man Kadarius Toney returned a punt for 65 yards.
To be fair to Sirianni and the Eagles, replacing two coordinators is going to be difficult as it is. Heck, it’s already proving to be a challenge. Special teams is certainly an area that needs improvement in 2023 and, while Clay’s extension is fair to question, Sirianni has earned a hefty amount of trust so far.
