A franchise quarterback needs help from several people.
In Philadelphia's case with Jalen Hurts, he's getting help from one unlikely source — Jonathan Gannon, the Eagles' defensive coordinator.
"It's very important to have a relationship with the defensive coordinator, with me helping him and him helping me," Hurts said. "I asked questions to get an understanding of what certain patterns are good versus certain coverages, and really getting an understanding of how he sees the game.
"We are just try to help each other get better — for real."
Hurts is entering a make-or-break year with the Eagles. The organization holds the necessary draft capital to make a move for one of the tantalizing young quarterbacks in college football.
Hurts' mentality in improvement
Hurts knows that. It's why he's eager to both prove himself and get as much help from coaches — even unlikely ones — as possible.
"It all comes back to the same thing for me, I don't like to get ahead of myself. I like to be where my feet are," Hurts said. "I take things day by day."
Though steady in his approach, Hurts doesn't want his passion for the game and for improvement to be lost on anyone.
"I care so much," Hurts said of improving. "I have so much passion for the game, for the process, for the work. and I have what it takes."
The front office has given him one more year to prove that he isn't just giving lip service, but that he can also deliver in high-stakes moments. After adding A.J. Brown, a premier wide receiver, the Eagles expect the offense to take a step forward.
Hurts expects the offense to take a step forward.
Last season, he led the Eagles to the NFL Playoffs last season, but the team fell flat against Tampa Bay.
Hurts knows the offense needs to be better. He also knows that the team won't reach that point overnight.
So, until then, he'll work, and receive help from anyone on the staff willing to offer a helping hand.
