Philadelphia Eagles second-year cornerback Quinyon Mitchell is continuing to prove that General Manager Howie Roseman knows exactly what he’s doing when it comes to drafting star players.

The Eagles’ former 2024 first-round pick was named NFL Defensive Player of the Week for the first time following his Week 4 performance in the team’s 31-25 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mitchell allowed just two catches on nine targets for six yards while matched up against Bucs’ wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, according to Pro Football Focus. He also held Chris Godwin to zero catches on nine targets. His five passes defended were a career high.

According to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, that’s his best game to date.

“Good. I thought he played very well the other day,” Fangio said. “I told him I think it was his best game since he’s been here. He played well.

So far this season, Mitchell has totaled 17 tackles, six pass breakups, and one fumble recovery over four games. His PFF overall grade currently stands at 72.6, which puts him 27th among 164 all cornerbacks.

Quinyon Mitchell Was the First Cornerback Howie Roseman Drafted in the First Round

Knowing that the Eagles would eventually be moving on from Darius Slay, Roseman selected Mitchell at No. 22 overall out of Toledo. But since he didn’t come from a big-name school, some questioned the pick. As for Howie, he did his extensive research and knew what he was doing all along.

“I think that for us, as the board kind of came off, and a lot of offensive players came off, we felt like we were in a good position,” he said. “At 22, the way it fell for us and the players that were left on the board, we had a hard decision based on the guys that were left on the board, but we felt based on the player, based on the totality of the circumstance of the player — his talent, his character, and the position — we felt like it was the right pick for us.”

Mitchell became the first cornerback that the Eagles ever drafted in the first round.

“In this case, we think we have an extremely talented, hardworking outside corner,” Roseman said. “So, he’s got all the tools in his body, the right mentality, we felt like we had really good information — Coach [Sirianni] did an unbelievable job because of his connections at Toledo, really kind of relaying those thoughts and us having those same conversations with the coaches.”

It’s safe to say that he nailed the pick.
