Several Philadelphia Eagles players made some great plays during Thursday night's 26-18 win over the Washington Commanders.
However, one player that may have gone unnoticed if you weren't watching closely is Eagles' rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.
Mitchell completely shut down Commanders' star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The Eagles' 2024 first-round pick held McLaurin to zero targets on 20 routes. Mitchell wasn't alone in shutting him down as Darius Slay also went against him. All in all, McLaurin made one catch on two targets.
While Mitchell did most of the work alone, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni credited the entire Eagles defense.
"First and foremost, Terry McLaurin is a phenomenal football player," Sirianni said after the game. "I liked him coming out. When I was in Indy– he was an Indianapolis kid– we did a lot of work on him and I really think the world of him, the player, the person. He’s been awesome in his career. With that being said, I think our guys did a nice job going against him. I think it started up front. We were able to get some pressure on the quarterback and force some scrambles, and we a good job plastering on some of those scrambles.
"But it’s just good team defense. A lot of credit to Q [Quinyon Mitchell] and [CB Darius] Slay and the underneath coverage that was helping them go other places with the football. Good team defense takes being on the same page, playing with great effort to the football, which I saw a lot in this game, and then just tackling well."
Mitchell's efforts on Thursday night are no surprise since he has been playing like a seasoned veteran all season long, but it's still astonishing to see just how consistent he really is.
He has been able to keep up with and shut down a handful of other star receivers like Dallas Cowboys' CeeDee Lamb and Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Mike Evans.
Mitchell doesn't have much to say about his overall performance on the year so far other than the simple fact that he's just doing his job.
"My approach is staying the same, each and every day, coming into work, studying on my own, studying with the coaches," Mitchell said. "I feel like everybody on the team is real hard on me. They expect better from me, and I appreciate it."
