Philadelphia Eagles rookie safety Andrew Mukuba put on one hell of a show in the team’s 20-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
Not only did Mukuba hold Chiefs wide receiver Hollywood Brown for no gain during the third quarter when the game was tied, but he also intercepted quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the fourth quarter. He then ran it back for 41 yards, which ultimately set the Birds up for a touchdown.
Earlier in the game, Mukuba assisted Za’Darius Smith with a sack.
Nick Sirianni is Far From Surprised With Mukuba’s Performance
The Eagles couldn’t get much going on offense, so the Eagles’ defense stepped up, with Mukuba showing exactly why Howie Roseman used a 2025 NFL Draft pick on him.
“When you see interceptions in the NFL, the quarterback is not throwing the ball to that guy, obviously. So, it’s just very rare that you get just this clean pick,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said after the win. “They happen, but a lot of them happen off of those types of plays right there, with a bounce of a ball and being in the right spot.
“It first starts with everyone being on the same page and everyone being in the right spot. Then it’s being able to take advantage when you get your hands on the football. He has the ability to do that. He showed that in the preseason. He showed that all through training camp. He showed that at Clemson. He showed that at Texas. And he’s got the ability to do that, and it’s a great quality to have.”
Mukuba, whom the Eagles selected 64th overall to help fill the void left by C.J. Gardner-Johnson, finished the victory with six tackles, 0.5 sacks, a QB hit, one tackle for loss, an interception, and a pass defensed.
