The Philadelphia Eagles have already turned their attention to the offseason. On Monday evening, it was reveled that they’ve agreed to terms with eight players. Today, that total increased.

The impact of the latest move may be the most notable of any of them for the Eagles offense.

Eagles add running back depth behind Saquon Barkley

According to Tom Pelissero, the Eagles are signing running back Carson Steele to a futures deal. This news came from Steele’s agent, Randy Fisher. Steele is a former Kansas City Chiefs draft pick and played a depth role for the team.

I talked to Charles Goldman, who covers the Chiefs, about this split for Steele and KC. He revealed how the specifics of the Eagles’ announcement and how that could affect Steele’s future in Philly.

“As disappointing as this departure might be for the fans because of Steele’s plucky nature and pet Alligator, it was easy to see it coming after Steele spent the 2025 NFL season on the team’s practice squad. He was on the team’s 53-man roster in 2024 and actually got some run, despite some early issues with fumbles. The thing to pay attention to here is the fact that Steele was announced to the Eagles as a running back and not a fullback. He played running back at UCLA in college, but he played a hybrid role in Kansas City, where the team tried to convert him into a more traditional fullback. Andy Reid has often carried a fullback on the 53-man roster during his career as head coach, but he didn’t in the 2023 NFL season or during the 2025 NFL season.

This feels like a split where the player realized he had better opportunity to play and have his talents utilized elsewhere, with the Chiefs making some head-scratching decisions at the running back position during its disappointing 2025 NFL season.” — Charles Goldman, A to Z Sports

Steele’s addition puts pressure on Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley

Tank Bigsby was acquired this past offseason to be Saquon Barkley’s backup. He has one season remaining on his deal. Will Shipley, however, was a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. With that, he’s under contract through 2027. Shipley has been largely inefficient on the ground to start his pro career, but he does have some special teams experience.

Bigsby impressed at times as the change of pace to Barkley, averaging 5.9 yards per carry during the regular season. It feels like he deserves another chance to make an impact in 2026.

Both players could see themselves on the roster bubble entering next season, regardless, and adding Steele to that fold only creates less room for mistakes or a lack of motivation for improvement.

On the other hand, maybe we see the Eagles divert from their announcement of Steele as an RB. They may choose to incorporate the fullback position a bit more often next season, and Ben VanSumeren is the only option on the current depth chart.
