The NFL's annual MVP award has been dominated by quarterbacks for a decade, however, Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley could change that this year.
That's because Barkley has been named an Associated Press finalist for the 2024 NFL MVP award.
A former New York Giants first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Barkley joined the Eagles last free agency and finished the 2024 regular season rushing for a franchise record of f 2,005 rushing yards.
He became just the ninth player in league history to log 2,000-plus rushing yards in a single season and currently holds the eighth-most rushing yards in league history. Barkley was also 101 rushing yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record, but the Eagles chose to rest their starters in Week 18.
Through the postseason so far, Barkley has run for 119 yards in the Eagles' Wild Card win over the Green Bay Packers and logged 205 rushing yards and two touchdowns against the Los Angeles Rams to help Philly advance to the NFC Conference Championship.
The last running back to win the NFL MVP award was Minnesota Vikings' Adrian Peterson back in 2012.
Since then, however, a quarterback has won the award every year.
Whether or not Barkley breaks the trend remains to be seen, but if he ends up being the main reason the Eagles advance to the Super Bowl pending what happens in Sunday's game against the Washington Commanders — then there shouldn't be any hesitation as to who deserves it.
Barkley is also a finalist for the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year award.
The winner of the MVP award will be announced at NFL Honors on Thursday, Feb. 6, in New Orleans at 9 p.m. ET.
