The Philadelphia Eagles made history last week when they signed running back Saquon Barkley to a new deal.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Philly and Barkley agreed to a two-year, $41.2 million contract extension that now makes him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

"The deal makes Barkley the NFL’s first $20 million+ per-year running back," Schefter wrote in his report on March 4. "Barkley also has the ability to earn an additional $15 million in incentives and escalators. The deal includes $36 million fully guaranteed at signing. The Eagles are taking the rare step of extending Barkley one year into his three-year deal – and in the same league year in which they signed him to the initial contract."

After one week of sitting under his new contract, Barkley spoke to reporters, where he shared a very humble reaction to his massive payday.

"It was mutual," Barkley said when asked if he was surprised. "The love I have for this organization and knowing I wanted to be here for a very long time. And the same thing that they feel for me. Obviously, it shows. I'm just thankful. Not only for the contract but also for being a part of this organization. From top to bottom, they do it the right way. Everybody in this building. So, to be able to be a part of this for another four years, I think, and hopefully more — I'm super excited about that."

Unlike Landon Dickerson, Barkley says he doesn't have plans to buy a fancy new lawnmower or anything extraordinary with all of the extra cash. However, he is thinking about a new golf membership.

The Eagles signed Barkley during NFL free agency last spring, and he was easily one of Howie Roseman's greatest offseason moves in franchise history.

Barkley finished the 2024 regular season with 2,005 rushing yards on 345 attempts and 13 rushing touchdowns. He also hauled in 33 receptions for 278 receiving yards and two more scores. Those numbers were enough to earn him the 2024 NFL's Offensive Player of the Year Award, and helped the Eagles reach a Super Bowl.

As for his next goal after inking his the deal, Barkley just wants to be the best.

"I want to be one of the greatest running backs of all time, if not the greatest running back of all time," Barkley said.
