A new behind-the-scenes video of Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is going viral for being a good teammate during Sunday's 28-3 win over his former team of six years, the New York Giants.
Barkley had already rushed for a season-high 176 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown, making him just 13 yards away from breaking a personal record late in the game when head coach Nick Sirianni gave him the option to chase the individual accolade.
Barkley's career-high in rushing yards is 189, which also marks the most rushing yards that any NFL running back has ever logged versus his former team.
But instead of going after that number, he opted to sit with the rest of the starters.
Saquon Barkley: 'Let them eat'
This is how that conversation between Sirianni and Barkley went.
Sirianni: "You‘re 13 yards away from your career high. I would love you to get that but that’s up to you. I do."
Barkley: “It’s all good.”
Sirianni: “I‘m gonna take out all the starters if they don’t score.'
Barkley: “I’m good. Let them eat.”
Sirianni: “Are you sure?”
Barkley: “Yep, I promise."
Sirianni: “Listen to me. I want you to do it if you want to do it.”
Barkley: “I’d rather see the young boys eat.”
Barkley's selflessness allowed Kenneth Gainwell to make some plays and rookie Will Shipley to see some action in the final quarter.
"I got word from the box that he was close to his career high," Sirianni said following the Eagles' Week 7 victory. "As I sat there with him I said, 'Here's where you are, and here's what it is.' And he looked at me and said — and this gives me chills to think about — he looked at me and said, 'Let the other guys eat.' I was like, 'You're special dude.' This guy is such a great teammate. All he cares about is winning."
Barkley will have another chance to chase his career-high against his former team when the Eagles close out the regular season against the Giants at the Linc in Week 18.
Eagles’ Jalen Hurts stands up for Nick Sirianni following dominant Week 7 Giants win
