It’s often said that the NFL is a copycat league. While there isn’t an exact Super Bowl blue print available, two of the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive stars had their Super Bowl dreams awakened almost exactly one season ago as the Cincinnati Bengals made their miraculous Super Bowl run.
While there are staunch differences between the Eagles and the Bengals, the teams do share commonalities when it comes to their quarterback and wide receiver pairings. So, for Jalen Hurts and Devonta Smith to watch Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase come so close to winning the Super Bowl in their first year together as pros, it awakened something in the Eagles’ duo.
Kinda disappointed in ourselves in seeing Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase do the things they did in their first year together,” Smith said. “It was just like, we see what they did, we can do it. And here we are.”
Hurts and Smith knew that they could reach Super Bowl heights, but there was still plenty of work to be done. In fact, during Super Bowl LVI, Hurts sent Smith a text message saying, “That can be us.”
Sure enough. Hurts, Smith and the rest of the Eagles team worked their way to the NFC’s No. 1 overall seed, dominating opponents in their path to Glendale, Arizona. Hurts believes that Smith put in the work to help Philadelphia reach this point.
“He has the right type of conviction and work ethic to go out there and work for it,” Hurts told reporters. “We’re out here now for a reason, because we put the work in. So, no surprise there.”
