The Philadelphia Eagles have a huge week coming up. Not because they have a big game on the schedule, but actually the complete opposite. Because of their Week 18 win over the New York Giants, they have the number one seed in the NFC, which allows them to have a bye week during wild card weekend.
But, that doesn't mean they actually get a week off. No, that just means they get a rest from in-game contact. They don't play an actual game, but they definitely still practice and prepare.
This week is just as important as the next, in that the rest and preparation this week carry over into the next. There are three key players on the Eagles that need to have a huge bye week to help their team perform the way we know they can next week.
Jalen Hurts, QB
This one was pretty obvious, wasn't it? The MVP candidate quarterback did not play like an MVP last week against the Giants. Sure, they got the win, but it wasn't pretty, and a lot of that falls on Hurts.
Since Week 15 Hurts has had an injured shoulder. He sat out two games, and the Eagles lost both. He came back to get a win in a game that was a must-win, but he said he was still hurt.
He needs to have a huge bye week, as this is the perfect time for him to get healthy, even if it's just a little bit more than he is now. Not to mention he gets to prep for a whole week too. This team wins and loses on the shoulders of Hurts, so let's hope those shoulders get healthy.
C.J. Garnder-Johnson, S
Before he got hurt, Gardner-Johnson was the best ball-hawking safety in the league, as he led the league in interceptions by a mile at the time of his injury. But, the lacerated kidney kept him out for a while.
Now that he is back, the Eagles need him at his best. His first game back was a bit rusty. He needs to use this bye week to get not only as healthy as possible but also in as good of game shape as possible.
Quez Watkins, WR
The third-best receiver on the team hasn't had the best last few weeks. Against the Cowboys, he dropped a few passes and one that led to an interception. Against the Saints, well, no one played well really. Now he needs to step it up to help relieve the pressure off of his teammates.
Not only will he help relieve some pressure off of Hurts, but also A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Whoever the Eagles play will be keying in on those two receivers, which will give Watkins the perfect opportunity to make up for the last few weeks.
