It has been a successful offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Though plenty of talent walked out of the door, the Eagles were able to re-sign star quarterback Jalen Hurts to a record-setting long-term extension. The franchise was also able to replace Miles Sanders and add some insurance in the secondary. All-in-all, there isn't much to complain about in Philadelphia.
It is why, when looking at players worthy of a long-term extension in training camp, a name that can't be ignored is offensive tackle and guard Jack Driscoll. Yes, it isn't a glamorous position like wide receiver, quarterback, or running back, but it is an integral slot. Let's examine why Driscoll needs to receive the assurance of a contract extension sooner rather than later.
Yes, Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and names like them are the reason the Eagles' offense hummed along at an impressive pace in 2022. But without players like Driscoll, who added depth to a fairly dominant offensive line, offensive production may have never gotten off the ground.
As a former fourth-round draft pick, Driscoll's calling card at the NFL level is his versatility. He can play at either tackle or guard position. With players like Lane Johnson continuing to age, Driscoll's adept ability to play nearly anywhere on the offensive line is only increasing in importance.
Driscoll has appeared in 37 games and made 16 starts over the last three seasons. And the team's overall depth at the tackle position dipped in the offseason, losing out on Andre Dillard, who left in free agency.
The weight of playing well at tackle falls on Driscoll's shoulders, as he will serve as the primary backup if Jordan Mailata or Johnson sustain a long-term injury in the season. Making his importance to the 2023 iteration of the Eagles greater.
That is why the Eagles need to make sure they lock him up for a reasonably priced long-term extension.
Driscoll will serve as the primary depth piece for the Eagles in 2023. If he doesn't have the contract assurance to coincide with his value to the team, the Eagles could struggle to keep their successful offensive line core together in the foreseeable future.
