The Philadelphia Eagles head into Week 4's matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a little banged up following their narrow 15-12 win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 3.
Starting right tackle Lane Johnson and starting wide receiver DeVonta Smith are currently in concussion protocol, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday on the Pat McAfee Show.
Whether or not either are ready by Sunday's game against the Bucs remains to be seen, but they'll both need to clear concussion protocol and six days likely won't be enough time.
“They’ve got him and Lane Johnson in concussion protocol this week, so typically, normally guys in protocol usually don’t make it back for the next week," Schefter said.
While Johnson would be a big loss for the Birds, the bigger question revolves around A.J. Brown (hamstring) and Smith's availability considering they're Jalen Hurts' No. 1 and 2 receivers.
"So now we’ve got two wide receiver questions for Philadelphia, not to mention a major one along its offensive line with Lane Johnson," Schefter said. "A.J. Brown, initially I said that he thought he would miss a couple of weeks This would be a couple of weeks. So I’m going to guess that A.J. Brown’s going to test out that hamstring to see how he’s doing. And DeVonta Smith has to go through the protocol to where he’s gotta get cleared. It’s always very difficult to predict whether a player will or won’t make it through protocol other than more often than not they don’t.
"So that’s kind of where we’re at with DeVonta Smith, and the Eagles have two big questions going into a big week.”
The Eagles also lost wide receiver Britain Covey to Injured Reserve on Tuesday due to a broken bone in his shoulder.
Their latest roster moves also suggest they could be in trouble at wide receiver since they added John Ross to the practice squad and signed tight end John Ross to the active roster for extra pass catcher depth.
The Eagles return to practice on Wednesday where we'll get a look at Week 4's first injury report.
