It wasn't too long ago that the Philadelphia Eagles were the best team in the NFL at 10-1 this year.
They were in control of the NFC East and No. 1 seed. Quarterback Jalen Hurts was an MVP favorite. Top wideout A.J. Brown was scoring touchdowns. They had the best run defense in the league and No. 6 overall defense.
Things have since changed, leaving many wondering if head coach Nick Sirianni should be canned for taking this team straight to the dumps.
ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter chimed in on Sirianni's future in Philly.
“We just kept waiting and assuming that this team was going to return to form and return to the glory that it had last year, and it just never did,” Schefter said Wednesday morning on 97.5 The Fanatic.
After beating the Buffalo Bills in Week 12, the Eagles lost three consecutive contests. They were able to snap out of the losing streak in Week 16 with a win over the New York Giants, but then their worst loss of the season came in Week 17 to the Arizona Cardinals.
With that loss, the Eagles officially lost out on the top seed and fell to the fifth seed and second place in the NFC East.
Despite the Eagles' unsuccessful attempt to their season around, Schefter doesn't see them moving on from Sirianni that easily.
“I don’t think they are firing Sirianni," Schefter said. "I do think there will be changes – his assistants. We’ve already begun to see them. There will be more. They aren’t going to stand pat, that’s not the way they do things."
Schefter believes losing offensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon and defensive guru Vic Fangio last season was their first mistake and had a lot to do with their downfall.
“You never in a million years thought they would lose to Jonathan Gannon, who got basically their season off track this year the way he left," Schefter said. The way that all went down with Vic Fangio ending up in Miami. That was the start of all this going wrong.”
Since joining the Eagles in 2021, Sirianni has an overall 34–15 winning record. He's also 2-2 in the postseason, including a Super Bowl appearance.
While flames may be going up in Philly, Sirianni isn't going anywhere.
"They’ve gone to the playoffs in three of three years," Schefter said. "You’re not firing a coach that has gone to the playoffs every year he’s coached that team.”
Here’s how the Eagles can clinch the NFC East in Week 18 vs. Giants
Yes, there’s still a chance.
