Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Avonte Maddox could be on track to revitalizing his career with a fresh start in Detroit. A change of scenery might be just what he needs to bounce back and reestablish himself as a reliable playmaker in the secondary.
ESPN recently named under-the-radar players from all 32 teams this offseason, and Maddox was the guy for the Detroit Lions.
Here's what ESPN had to say:
Detroit added Maddox, an unrestricted free agent, to help with the secondary, and head coach Dan Campbell sees him as a guy who will "fit right in with us" after evaluating him during the offseason program. The Detroit native has looked good so far, impressing Campbell, and he brings a ton of experience as a Super Bowl champion and veteran player, who has spent the past seven seasons in Philadelphia.
The former fourth-round pick also contributed a role in the Eagles' championship victory with a pass breakup in Super Bowl LIX on Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes during a fourth-down play while appearing in every postseason game. — Eric Woodyard
Maddox's 2024 and final season with the Birds was far from his best, considering he was ultimately benched in favor of rookie Cooper DeJean following the team's bye week after he gave up 10 catches on 19 targets for a total of 115 yards through the first four games of the season.
He did, however, make up for his losses as DeJean's backup and finished the year with 20 total tackles (nine solo) while also adding five passes defended.
The former fourth-round pick by the Eagles in the 2018 NFL Draft, officially left Philly for Detroit in NFL free agency after racking up 270 tackles, four interceptions, three sacks, 36 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery through 81 regular season games.
Hopefully, Maddox thrives in Detroit, just not in Week 11 when the Eagles have to face him.
