The Philadelphia Eagles have brought in some new faces on both sides of the ball this offseason. That being said, re-signing certain veteran talent holds plenty of value for a team like the Birds, too.

They have Super Bowl pedigree and understand the players who have been around the team better than anyone. Their latest move makes plenty of sense for Sean Mannion’s offense in 2026.

Eagles bring back OL Fred Johnson as key backup

According to Tom Pelissero, the Eagles have re-signed offensive lineman Fred Johnson to a one-year deal. Johnson was pivotal for the Birds OL last season after multiple injuries affected the effectiveness and experience along the unit. Johnson is 28 years old.

In 2025, Johnson started a career high eight games for the Eagles and played a career high 626 snaps on offense. This move will fly under the radar, but it was smart to keep him in the fold as a potential backup for Lane Johnson or Jordan Mailata.

Fred Johnson re-signing GRADE: B+

I think Johnson is the definition of a veteran presence to hold down the third OT spot on a roster. He’s proven he can give you solid performances when called upon, especially if he is playing alongside consistent starters along an offensive line.

For the Eagles, they wanted more continuity. In front of Jalen Hurts, it is important that members of the OL know how he operates and wants to play off script when necessary.

The future of the OL for Philadelphia

Looking ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft, I think interior offensive line depth could still be address on day two potentially. Adding a backup center with potential behind Cam Jurgens would be smart, and guard Landon Dickerson considered retirement this offseason.

At offensive tackle, Philly could pick one as early as the first round. Lane Johnson’s time on the field is probably winding down, and 2026 could be his last season. Finding a long-term replacement for him sooner rather than later may be on Howie Roseman’s radar.
