Howie Roseman has an obvious decision to make with a familiar face following the latest NFL news.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Houston Texans have released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Causing Friction in Houston Locker Room

The move comes after Gardner-Johnson’s slow start to the season and some behind-the-scenes friction, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.

#Texans released C.J. Gardner-Johnson after friction behind the scenes with him complaining about his role, wanting to blitz more, per league sources, and even communicating that he wanted to be traded. It didn’t work out for him here. M.J. Stewart next man up expected @KPRC2,” Wilson reported on X/Twitter.

He stated in another post that he ultimately wasn’t a good fit.

Among the issues #Texans experienced behind the scenes with C.J. Gardner-Johnson, per sources, he was critical of teammates in the secondary and didn’t like his role. It was a locker room issue and ultimately this just wasn’t a good fit for the team and for a talented player @KPRC2,” Wilson added.

Gardner-Johnson started all three games for the Texans, playing 96 percent of defensive snaps and recording 15 total tackles.

While he may have caused trouble in Houstin, Gardner-Johnson was a great fit in Philly before they traded him to the Texans in exchange for Kenyon Green. Not only that, but the Eagles are desperate for a reliable safety alongside Reed Blankenship and knowing they already have that bond could mean an immediate huge boost for their secondary.

Before the trade, Gardner-Jhnson started all 16 regular-season games in 2024 with the Birds, recording 59 total tackles (35 solo), 12 pass deflections, six interceptions (tied for third in the NFL), and a 69-yard pick-six against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 that earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Roseman will likely attempt to bring him back but then it would come down to whether or not he would want to come back after the Eagles left a bitter taste in his mouth with a surprise trade.
