Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has engineered one of the best offseasons in recent memory. However, Roseman’s biggest chess move yet might have come on Thursday via waivers.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Eagles claimed running back Trey Sermon off waivers.

This move comes after the San Francisco 49ers released their 2021 third-rounder pick in the 2021 NFL Draft just one day ago.

49ers GM John Lynch stated that multiple teams had been in contact with him regarding Sermon’s availability throughout training camp. It comes as no surprise that the Eagles were in that mix.

Lynch also referred to Sermon as “one of our best players” just three weeks ago.

Instead of losing a draft pick in a trade, Roseman was able to get his guy free of charge on Thursday.

Sermon played in nine games during his rookie season. He totaled 167 yards on just 41 carries, finding the endzone on one occasion. He also caught three passes for 26 yards.

Sermon spent his first three years in college at Oklahoma University before transferring to Ohio State. His arrival in Philadelphia will look familiar as he joins former Sooner teammates Jalen Hurts, Kennedy Brooks, and Grant Calcaterra.

Though he is beginning the season on the practice squad, the Eagles essentially added an extra draft pick with the addition of the 23 year old. It’s a low risk signing that has a chance to pay dividends later in the season.

The general manager’s seat is never cool in Philadelphia, but Roseman has had one hell of an offseason. He has thoroughly strengthened this roster without sacrificing the future of the franchise.

Stay hot, Howie.
