The Philadelphia Eagles were four points away from winning their second Super Bowl in five seasons against the Kansas City Chiefs. Normally, all the praise goes to players on the winning team, but one Eagle, in particular, is getting major recognition.
Eagles' quarterback Jalen Hurts stepped up big time on the biggest stage, silencing a lot of his critics. Chiefs' All-Pro tight Travis Kelce, who had 81 yards and a touchdown himself in the Super Bowl, gave Hurts the ultimate compliment for his extraordinary performance.
“Arguably could’ve had the MVP even with the loss," said Kelce. "I mean, how many touchdowns, he was lights out. With his feet, with his arm, you name it man, he was playing his tail off."
Hurts was masterful without a doubt. He tied a Super Bowl record with three rushing touchdowns and set the record for rushing yards by a quarterback. Hurts also became the first player in NFL history to pass for over 300 yards, rush for at least 70 yards, and have three rushing scores in a postseason game.
Many felt that Hurts wasn't equipped to be a good passer on the NFL level. Well, in the Super Bowl, Hurts completed 71% of his passes (27 out of 38) and three of his weapons had at least six receptions.
Hurts had an amazing season in 2022. He threw for 3,701 yards and added another 760 on the ground, scoring 12 rushing touchdowns. Philadelphia was 16-2 with Hurts as the starter including the playoffs and he finished second to Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes for league MVP honors.
Losing the Super Bowl is tough, for obvious reasons. As difficult as it may have been, Hurts had an interesting perspective and what he took away from the experience.
"You decide if you want to learn from it," said Hurts. "You decide if you want to use that to be a teachable moment. I know what I'll do"
Hurts certainly learned a lot last offseason which allowed him to elevate his game. Now, he has the ultimate motivation, getting back to Super Bowl and finishing the job.
