The Philadelphia Eagles may want to spend a few of their draft picks on a cornerback because the organization will most likely lose out on James Bradberry.
Bradberry, 29, is set to become a free agent. And despite his Super Bowl blunder, he wants everyone to know he wants a top-dollar contract.
“I think my stats show that I should be a top-dollar guy,” said Bradberry last week after Super Bowl LVII, “but I know there are a whole bunch of variables that go into that. We’ll see."
He added: “I think I deserve top dollar… Just a matter of who’s out there willing to pay it at the end of the day.”
Why the Eagles should let him walk
Bradberry will turn 30 in August. He isn't exactly getting better as he ages. He did bet on himself, signing a one-year contract. And that bet appeared to pay off. But if history is any indicator, paying a cornerback a large sum of money after they turn 30 is a critical mistake.
As a result, Bradberry knows he will most likely play on a different team come next season. So he also set some parameters for what he is expecting come to his free agency selection.
“I would probably say I want to go to a team that has a good roster,” he said. “And of course, I want the number to be right. What that number is for me in my head, I haven’t figured it out yet. I got more time to think about it. But I know I want to be on a good roster.”
The Eagles enjoyed a good season from Bradberry. History suggests he doesn't have that many good seasons ahead of him. Philadelphia should use this opportunity to let him walk, opting to draft a young corner on a rookie-scale contract.
