The Philadelphia Eagles were rocked to their core when long-time offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland announced his departure from the organization recently. Internal frustrations played a key cog in his exit.

The latest news regarding Kevin Patullo won’t make the situation any clearer for the future, either. Instead, fans may be scratching their heads at how they needed up losing one of the most well-respected OL coaches in the NFL even more.

Kevin Patullo takes job with Miami Dolphins

According to Mike Garafolo, Kevin Patullo is joining the Dolphins offensive staff as their pass game coordinator. He was the Eagles offensive coordinator last season, amid some frustrating inconsistency and fan backlash throughout the campaign.

Patullo was relieved of his title as OC earlier this offseason, but there was some belief he may stay on staff in a different role. Now, that is not the case as Sean Mannion has been hired as the team’s new offensive coordinator under head coach Nick Sirianni.

Eagles’ trust in Patullo damaged their relationship with Jeff Stoutland

It’s been well-reported that the coaching staff last season under Nick Sirianni had its bumps and bruises. Emotions seemingly boiled over to a point once Stoutland was overlooked in game planning, even though he held the title of run game coordinator and offensive line coach for Philly.

“[Nick Sirianni] and OC Kevin Patullo began incorporating different run designs in an effort to kick start the operation. Stoutland was not consulted about the changes to what he felt was an appropriate degree, a league source said, to the point where he no longer desired the title of run game coordinator because he felt it no longer fit his job description. That experience gave him pause about continuing on with the organization.” — Tim McManus

Looking back, this overstep from Sirianni and an inexperienced offensive play caller in Patullo may have truly cost them more seasons with Stoutland in the fold.

Instead of accepting that it was not working for the offense and making adjustments, the Eagles doubled down and showed blind trust in Patullo, who shared a strong relatinpsihip with Sirianni. Now, it is at least a factor in one of the most frustrating outcomes for the coaching staff imaginable.

Plus, Patullo is now with another team as well. We’ll see if Sean Mannion and his group can find success and remedy some fan frustration stemming from last season’s lackluster results.
