Lane Johnson, Jalen Hurts get honest about the Eagles playing ‘ugly’ football as Philly marches toward goal of sustained success
Winning matters most.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni emphasized “sustained success” as his core message to the team this summer, focusing on how they build on their Super Bowl LIX win and keep moving forward.
Through the first two weeks of the 2025 NFL season, that mindset appears to be paying off with the Eagles beating both the Dallas Cowboys and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Still, the wins haven’t exactly been dominant or clean. However, veteran right tackle Lane Johnson isn’t too concerned with the style points. As long as the Eagles keep winning, Johnson won’t be dwelling on how ugly it looks.
“If it comes down to shitty, ugly football that we’re barely winning, I’ll take it,” Johnson said. “Would you like it to be that way? No. You’d like it to be more efficient. But we spend a lot of time working on this game to try to win those things.”
The Eagles’ offense and defense have each had their sloppy moments, with very little momentum coming from either side of the ball. Regardless of not looking perfect, they have managed to make the big plays when they matter most.
“You know, I think we talk a lot about winning our double positive, and that means for us, winning the explosive play battle and winning our turnover battle,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said after the win. “So we’ve been able to win that turnover battle. I think that we need to be better in the explosive-play battle. There’s no doubt about it.”
Jalen Hurts Says Eagles Are Still Searching for Team Identity
The Eagles have averaged just 119 passing yards with 7.0 yards per completion over the last two games, and quarterback Jalen Hurts has yet to throw a touchdown pass.
Hurts is chalking it up to the team still searching for its identity.
“We just need to continue to find out what our identity is,” Hurts said. “I’d be lying to you if I said that we were established and knew exactly who we are. Who knows who they are in week two? Who knows who they are in week one? Who knows who they are in the first quarter of the season?
“It’s just about staying diligent, staying together and finding ways to win. We can go back to film and assess these things, but when you have a level of mental toughness to yourself and you are able to stay focused, remain disciplined and play fundamental football, you find ways to win.”
As long as the Eagles keep winning, there’s clearly no reason to panic just yet.
