The Philadelphia Eagles are getting a boost to their linebackers group.

After biting their nails over the weekend while they waited on a decision, All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard is signing with the Birds instead of the Dallas Cowboys.

The announcement comes just an hour after CBS Sports' insider Josina Anderson reported that the Eagles were "optimistic" that they would land Shaq, while the Cowboys were ultimately left in the dust.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler added to the reports that "Dallas was all-in on signing Leonard but things were quiet today, with some there wondering whether he had moved on."

Well, now the Cowboys have their clarification.

Fowler also reports that in addition to signing Leonard, the Eagles have "inquired" about bringing Zach Ertz back to Philly, though he is still "evaluating" his options.

Leonard's Signing is Perfect Timing

Leonard, 28, was originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He spent six seasons with the Colts before being released by the team last week.

While playing for Indianapolis, Leonard, or "the Maniac," was named 2018 Defensive Rookie of the Year, appeared in three straight Pro Bowls (2019-21 and also earned All-Pro honors three times (2018, 2019, 2021).

Unfortunately over the last two seasons, Leonard's resume hasn't been as impressive. That's mainly due to two back surgeries he underwent last season and his limited playing time this year.

Before exiting, Leonard had appeared in nine games for the Colts in 2023, registering 65 tackles, two tackles for loss and not a single sack or interception.

In five and a half seasons with the Colts, Leonard saw action in 70 games where he logged 32 tackles for losses, 31 passes defensed, 12 interceptions, 17 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

While he may no longer be his "Maniac" self, Leonard's presence will provide a nice veteran boost to an injured and struggling Eagles linebacker room as they prepare to face the Cowboys next Sunday.
