You would be hard-pressed to find anybody who would say something negative about the Eagles' 2023 NFL Draft performance.
The team had two first-round picks in the draft and selected two of the top overall talents available in Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith.
Naturally, the media loved what the Eagles did in the first round, with many pundits questioning if Carter was actually the most talented player in the draft. The draft has come and gone, and the media and fans are still blown away by this Eagles' class.
Matt Miller of ESPN recently ranked the best 100 picks of the 2023 NFL Draft. Coming in at the third-best pick is Jalen Carter by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Regarding the pick, Miller said the following:
I looked at value, scheme fit and need when ranking these picks. The Carter selection hits all three components. Philadelphia was the ultimate best-case scenario for Carter to realize his immense football potential. In the Eagles' culture — and alongside former teammates Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean — he has the tools to become the league's best interior defender within his rookie contract. Philly landed arguably the most talented player in the class at ninth overall.
Miller mentions the familiarity of playing around several college teammates as a bonus for Carter in Philadelphia. Also, the ability to learn under Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham should be invaluable to the young tackle.
Carter currently projects to start next to Fletcher Cox on the interior defensive line, with former Georgia teammate Jordan Davis seeing plenty of snaps as well. The Eagles boasted the best defensive front in the league in 2022, and there's no reason to believe they won't do the same in 2023.
For the record, Miller thought highly of the Eagles' other first-rounder as well, ranking the Smith selection No. 18.
