The Philadelphia Eagles have high hopes for the 2023 NFL season. After a heartbreaking SBLVII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, anything short of a return to the big game will likely be a disappointment.
The team lost several notable players in free agency but strong drafting should have the team in a stable position. The team also did well to keep solid veterans such as Fletcher Cox and Darius Slay.
Shortly after the draft, we took a shot at projecting the final roster. With OTAs now behind us, let's take another stab at predicting this final roster.
Note: Players with single asterisk (*) are 2023 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) are 2023 undrafted free agents.
Quarterback (3)
IN: Jalen Hurts, Marcus Mariota, Tanner McKee*
OUT: Ian Book
The skinny: This room is likely set. Book is a solid depth QB but the Eagles likely won't risk losing McKee on waivers. Mariota provides the team with a veteran backup who can run a similar offense to Hurts in practice.
Running back (4)
IN: D'Andre Swift, Kenneth Gainwell, Rashaad Penny, Trey Sermon
OUT: Boston Scott, Kennedy Brooks
The skinny: This is one of the notable changes from last month's edition. I have Sermon beating out Scott for the final RB spot. Sirianni spoke highly of Sermon this offseason and Scott has never done anything to show he needs to be more involved.
Wide receiver (6)
IN: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Olamide Zaccheaus, Quez Watkins, Tyrie Cleveland, Britain Covey
OUT: Greg Ward, Devon Allen, Joseph Ngata**, Charleston Rambo, Jadon Haselwood**
The skinny: Covey becomes important with Scott not making the roster. The receiver was a weapon in the return game last year and makes the team again for that reason. Ward and Cleveland should battle for the final spot.
Tight end (3)
IN: Dallas Goedert, Jack Stoll, Dan Arnold
OUT: Grant Calcaterra, Dalton Keene, Tyree Jackson, Brady Russell**
The skinny: This could end up being a tight competition. Goedert and Stoll are locks, so the last spot will be a battle. I give Arnold the slight edge due to his receiving abilities.
Offensive line (9)
IN: Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Jason Kelce, Cam Jurgens, Lane Johnson, Brett Toth, Sua Opeta, Tyler Steen, Jack Driscoll
OUT: Cameron Tom, Fred Johnson, Tyrese Robinson, Roderick Johnson, Chim Okorafor**, Julian Good-Jones, Trevor Reid**
The skinny: This is one of the most solid groups in football, even with Isaac Seumalo and Andre Dillard departing. Toth and Driscoll are solid backup tackles while Steen and Opeta can fill in on the interior.
Defensive line/EDGE (9)
IN: Fletcher Cox, Jalen Carter*, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Jordan Davis, Derek Barnett, Milton Williams, Janarius Robinson, Marlon Tuipulotu,
OUT: Kentavius Street, Noah Elliss, Moro Ojomo*, Matt Leo, Tarron Jackson
The skinny: This is a very tough group to crack. Any of the players on the out could be claimed on cutdown day. For now, I have rookie Moro Ojomo and former Saint Kentavius Street just missing the cut.
Outside linebacker (Sam/Will) (4)
IN: Hasson Reddick, Nolan Smith*, Nicholas Morrow, Davion Taylor
OUT: Shaun Bradley, Patrick Johnson, Kyron Johnson
The skinny: Reddick, Smith and Morrow are locks. I have Taylor making it as a depth special teams piece, but an outside addition could be made here.
Inside linebacker (2)
IN: Nakobe Dean, Christian Elliss
OUT: Ben VanSumeren**
The skinny: Not much controversy here. Dean should seamlessly slide into the role formerly occupied by TJ Edwards. The depth could be improved throughout the LB room, but this will do for now.
Cornerback (6)
IN: Darius Slay, James Bradberry, Avonte Maddox, Kelee Ringo*, Greedy Williams, Zech McPhearson
OUT: Josiah Scott, Mario Goodrich, Josh Jobe, Mekhi Garner**, Eli Ricks*
The skinny: This group got stronger after the draft with the addition of Ringo. Slay, Bradberry, and Maddox will be on the field a ton, while Ringo, Williams, and McPhearson provide solid depth. Garner and Ricks would be nice to keep on the practice squad if possible.
Safety (4)
IN: Terrell Edmunds, Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown*, K'Von Wallace
OUT: Tristan McCollum, Justin Evans
The skinny: The team seems comfortable with Blankenship stepping into a larger role. However, don't rule out the addition of a certain unhappy Pro Bowler before the season.
Special Teams (3)
IN: Arryn Siposs (P), Jake Elliott (K), Rick Lovato (LS)
OUT: Ty Zentner (P)**
The skinny: Don't expect any controversy here. It appears this group is already set.
