The Eagles, fresh off of a Super Bowl appearance, have spent the majority of the offseason trying to maintain the status quo.
With so many big names headed for free agency, the Eagles did well to retain so many. While the emphasis was placed on retention, the team also made a few moves that I think will pay off.
Today, I wanted to identify the three current Eagles that I believe have the best shot at breaking out in 2023.
Rashaad Penny, RB
This might be cheating considering Penny has only been an Eagle for a month, but I'm going to allow it.
I truly see Penny having a monster year in Philadelphia. The concern surrounding Penny has never been his skill level, but rather his health.
The former first-round pick has yet to play a full season, and he was drafted in 2018.
However, when healthy, Penny has been fantastic.
In 2022 before losing another season to injury, Penny was averaging a whopping 6.1 yards per attempt. This wasn't a fluke either, as the back averaged 6.3 yards per attempt in a larger sample size in 2021.
Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott, and Trey Sermon will also be competing for snaps, but when healthy Penny is undoubtedly the most talented.
I expect Gainwell to still see the field on passing downs, as he is a much better receiving back than Penny. Penny should be the workhorse back, though, and if he finally stays healthy, he could have a dominant season.
Nakobe Dean, LB
Dean's career has not started the way he probably imagined it would.
While once considered a first-round pick, Dean fell to the third round before being selected in 2022. As a rookie in Philadelphia, Dean appeared in all 17 games but mainly played on special teams.
In 2023, however, Dean is set for a much larger role.
TJ Edwards was the middle linebacker (Mike) in 2022 and had a fantastic season that led to a big payday in free agency. With Edwards out of the picture, Dean is currently listed as the Mike LB.
Dean will be ready for the opportunity. The young defender won the Butkus Award in 2021 for the Georgia Bulldogs and was also a unanimous All-American.
Dean is known for his pass coverage skills, but he also isn't afraid to meet a running back at the line of scrimmage.
Edwards put up huge numbers in 2022 as the Mike. I expect the same to happen for Dean in 2023.
Jordan Davis, DT
This one might be obvious, but that doesn't make it any less true.
Davis is set to receive a larger role after not making much of an impact as a rookie. The massive defensive lineman will try to make up for the loss of Javon Hargrave.
Davis had a storied career at Georgia, winning the Chuck Bednarik Award, Outland Trophy, and the 2021 National Championship. His massive frame forced opponents to run in the opposite direction, and his surprising quickness threw blockers off balance.
Davis will be next to Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, and Josh Sweat on the Eagles' defensive line. I expect the Eagles to boast an elite run defense once again in 2023 with that much talent on the line.
Davis will have all the opportunities to prove he was worthy of being a first-round pick just one year ago. Do not be surprised if, by this time next year, Davis has established himself as one of the best 4-3 defensive tackles in the league.
