The Philadelphia Eagles (5-2) have been on the search for their team identity since their Week 5 bye and it looks like they found it after picking up their third straight victory on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals (3-5).
After dancing around the question at the start of the season, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni finally appears to have a solid answer.
"Identity gets overblown. I really believe that, like, what's the identity? What's the identity?' And I tell you, I've told you guys this a bunch, like, our identity is playing with great detail. Our identity is to play physical with toughness and our identity is to play together, and everything else changes week to week," Sirianni said after beating he Bengals 37-17 in Week 8.
The Eagles are looking like a perfectly well-balanced football team in the run and passing game. And then defensively — they're nearly unstoppable. That makes it hard to put them in one box.
"I think the identity of this football team is physical and that's what we're going to try to play by each week is physical," Sirianni said.
Sirianni used DeVonta Smith's 46-yard touchdown reception in the win as an example of how physicality ties a team together.
"When you say physical that doesn't mean you have to run it," said Sirianni. "Every time you run it, you pass it, you can put be physical in both aspects. On the long touchdown pass to DeVonta [Smith], Jack Stoll was physical on that block on the perimeter. Wait, till you see that one again, where you're watching Jack Stoll block the perimeter and giving Jalen [Hurts] enough time to make a perfect throw and somebody to make a big-time catch."
Sirianni and the Eagles will look to continue to polish their team identity when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-6) at the Linc in Week 9.
