As the Philadelphia Eagles look to replace the empty coordinator roles on the coaching staff, head coach Nick Sirianni said it wouldn't change what he does.
Even with a new coordinator, he is still relinquishing play-calling duties to whoever comes in. He believes the Eagles are better that way.
“It does help me manage the game better in my opinion,” he said. “It, helps me interact with the players more on the sideline. And it helps me be able to discuss something with somebody upstairs to get on the defensive headset when the offense is up or vice versa. Yes, that will be my intent, to let the next offensive coordinator call the game.”
As things change, they tend to stay the same. Philadelphia made it to the Super Bowl with former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen calling the game. Now, whoever the Eagles bring in will have the same level of trust from Sirianni.
Quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson is the candidate that is expected to replace Steichen as offensive coordinator, although the Eagles haven’t made it official yet.
Srianni ceded play-calling duties to Steichen two months into the 2021 season. Philadelphia never looked back, establishing an offensive identity while finishing the season 7-2 in their last nine meaningful games to make the playoffs.
Overall, the Eagles are 21-5 since Sirianni gave up calling plays primarily. It's a winning recipe. It's clear that with whoever comes in as the offensive coordinator, Sirianni is going to keep doing what has worked well to this point.
