Rumor has it that Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert may have seen his last days in Midnight Green.
This week at the NFL league meetings, head coach Nick Sirianni addressed the Goedert trade rumors and, similar to general manager Howie Roseman, he left the door wide open on the veteran tight end's future in Philly.
“Right now he’s on our football team and obviously Dallas Goedert has meant a lot to us,” Sirianni said. “We’ll see how that plays out. He’s a heck of a football player, heck of a leader. Want to be able to bring back as many guys as you can. But that is not the reality of the NFL. We’ll see what happens and how that happens but of course you want everyone back.”
For reference, here is what Roseman said: "There's no update. Obviously, Dallas has been a tremendous player and person for us. … The opportunities that we got into free agency with Harrison Bryant and [Kylen] Granson were just opportunities we felt were good for our football team. I know certainly that Dallas is a unique player. So really, that's kind of where we're standing."
Goedert is set to enter the final year of his four-year, $57 million contract extension this season. He will account for $11.8 million against the Eagles' cap but will carry $23.8 million in dead money in 2026 due to void years.
If Philly were to trade Goedert before June 1, they would take $21.39 million in dead money this year. However, trading him post-June 1 would reduce it to $7.76 million in dead money, which would save the Eagles $4.05 million this year, and then the rest would spill into next offseason. That would be the best option that would help the Eagles financially.
The problem now is finding a trade suitor. The Eagles were reportedly looking for a fourth-round pick in exchange for Geodert but have not found a team willing to do that.
Goedert, 30, finished the 2024 season reeling in 42 passes for 496 yards and two touchdowns through 10 games. While he has been reliable when he is healthy, it's worth noting that he has missed 10 games over the last two seasons due to injuries.
It sounds like if the Eagles find the right trade partner, then Goedert will be out of Philly, though there is no doubt that he will be missed.
“We won a Super Bowl last year and everybody was responsible for that,” Sirianni said. “Even going back to Chauncey (Gardner-Johnson), anytime somebody moves on, whether it’s Sweaty (Josh Sweat), whether it’s Milton (Williams) or whoever it is, obviously you did special things together and you’ll miss them along the way. But you want to try to hold on to as many guys as you can if it’s the right (move) because we did something special, but there’s more to it than that.”
