The Philadelphia Eagles defense is in shambles.
Head coach Nick Sirianni thought demoting defensive coordinator Sean Desai and handing play-calling duties over to Matt Patricia might light a spark, but we have yet to see that.
In fact, one could argue that the Eagles' defense has even declined.
Under Desai, the Eagles gave up an average of 24 points per game. With Patricia in charge, they're surrendering an average of 26 points per game.
The Eagles have also lost two of the three games that Patricia has called and they have blown leads in both of those losses.
Despite seeing little to no change of defense, Sirianni says he has no regrets about expanding Patricia's role.
"No. No, I don’t," Sirianni said during Monday's press conference. "Again, everything that I do, every decision that I make, is with the thought of the team first and what is best for the team.
"You know, the adjustments that I made a couple weeks ago were in attempts to do what was best for the team, and I still believe that. We made some adjustments. Coming off a game like that, no one is going to be satisfied about anything that happened. But I do believe in the guys that we have on the field. I do believe on the guys that we have – the defensive coaches. And so no, again, every decision I’m trying to make, is what’s best for the team, and I believe that adjustment was necessary and where we are right now."
With one more regular season game to go before the NFL playoffs, Sirianni says he plans to keep Patricia as the team's de facto defensive coordinator. After all, there's nobody else the Eagles can turn to at this point in the season.
"We’re going to continue to go in the direction we’re going in on defense that we’ve been these last couple weeks," Sirianni said. "Again, we made an adjustment earlier in the year to get things going back on track. For a couple weeks, we felt like they were, and then yesterday obviously wasn’t up to what we wanted to be able to do and play to our standard or coach to our standard. But we’ll continue in that direction."
The Eagles still have a chance at winning the NFC East on Sunday, but they'll need to beat the New York Giants. They also need the Dallas Cowboys to lose.
But if they can't even win their final matchup and the defense flops again, then you can expect Sirianni to be burning on the hot seat.
