Nick Sirianni’s OC hire has Super Bowl connection to a former fan favorite coach for the Eagles
Sean Mannion creates a bit of deja vu for Eagles fans.
The Philadelphia Eagles no longer need to hire a new offensive coordinator. Now former Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion will get his first opportunity to call plays in the NFL as the new OC for Nick Sirianni.
With this hire, there has been a bit of talk about a notable connection to one of the top head coaches of this generation for Mannion.
Sean Mannion’s hiring draws comparison to Andy Reid for Eagles
The last QBs coach from Green Bay to go to Philadelphia was Andy Reid. The bold, comedic head man who has reigned in the NFL since just before the turn of the century has that unique connection to the new OC.
Also, at just 33 years old, Sean Mannion is the youngest Eagles offensive coordinator hire since 1995. That hire was a 31-year-old Jon Gruden, who became one of the top offensive minds in the league rather quickly as well.
Reid is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs. He spent 1999-2012 as the HC for the Eagles and grew into one of the most experienced, and well-versed, offensive leaders in the sport.
Reid spent a bit longer with Green Bay before landing that HC position, as Mannion was an assistant for Matt LaFleur’s team for just two seasons before landing this position in Philly. That’s a meteoric rise when you consider how long some other assistants have waited to land a coordinator or head coaching job.
While risky, it is the sort of aggressive move that I appreciate from the Eagles staff and front office.
