The Philadelphia Eagles have a big game coming up against the Detroit Lions. That may now sound like a big game, but it means more than you would think.
No, the Lions won’t be a very good team, even though it looks like they will be better than last season. However, they can pose a threat to any team. This is the NFL, where anything can happen, and the Lions beating the Eagles is not out of the realm of possibilities.
The Eagles have big aspirations for this season. The moves they made this off-season tell that story well enough. Here are just a few of them.
They went out and signed Haason Reddick, an elite pass rusher on the edge. Over the last two years, he has had a combined 23.5 sacks. The Eagles needed another guy who could get to the quarterback and they got one.
Then they traded for A.J. Brown, one of the best receivers in the league. They sent their 2022 18th overall pick to the Titans to do so. The receiving room needed some help, too.
And most recently, the Eagles traded for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, a defensive back who can do a little bit of everything and fits the identity of this team to a tee.
Just those moves alone should let people know that the Eagles are ready for a chance at a Super Bowl.
The Lions are consistently getting better, and I think everyone knows that. So this game is just as important for them, but for other reasons.
Why is this game against a team who will likely be at the bottom of the standings so important? Well, one main reason.
This game is so vital for the Eagles in terms of the type of momentum they enter the season on. If they win Sunday, they will be riding high heading into Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.
If they lose on Sunday, it could change the way they start the next few weeks in terms of confidence.
Despite the opponent not being great, the Eagles can surely make this a fun game to watch. With everything they have going for them in 2022, Sunday should be one that we can’t turn off. Let’s hope the Eagles don’t come out slow and start their season off with a big win over a team that can put up a bigger fight than many may expect.
